AISHA FUKUSHIMA is a singer, educator, writer and self-proclaimed ‘RAPtivist’ (rap activist). She has lived and engaged in hip hop communities in France, Japan, Morocco, England, South Africa, Senegal, India and Denmark. Leader of the ‘RAPtivism’ (rap activism) project, Aisha works to raise awareness around global intersections between hip hop and social justice. Her RAPtivism work has been featured in publications such as Oprah Magazine, The Bangalore Mirror and HYPE : South Africa’s#1 Hip Hop Magazine. Growing up behind the scenes of the music industry, Aisha experienced the live music of legendary artists such as Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, The Stylistics and James Brown whose creativity has served as a major source of inspiration for hip hop. She has toured internationally in Europe and North Africa with Moroccan pop singer, Oum, and recorded collaboratively with more than 20 leading political hip hop acts from around the world including Black Noise (South Africa), Positive Black Soul (Senegal) and DJ Noize (Denmark). Aisha has also graced stages from Seattle’s historic Paramount Theater to Pirineos Sur in the mountains of Spain and Mawazine Festival hosted by King Mohammed VI in Rabat, Morocco. Aisha’s passion for cultivating critical thinking through the performing arts led her to create educational programs such as Turn Off The Stereotypes in 2005 and the Whitman Institute of Summer Enrichment in 2006. Aisha has also presented on RAPtivism at universities and conferences in cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, Copenhagen and Berlin. This summer, she plans to deliver a TED talk in Alaska and travel to Kazakhstan as a Cultural Speaker with the support of the U.S. State Department. Aisha holds an honors degree in Rhetorical and Film Studies from Whitman College with minors in French and Gender Studies. She currently lives in the California Bay Area where, in addition to performing, she works as a teaching artist for Performing Arts Workshop and a public school educator.
